Emergency Preparedness Week: Plan for every season

This year, Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week) is on May 5-11, 2024 and the theme for this year is “Plan for every season”

Emergency Preparedness Week encourages Canadians to take concrete actions to be better prepared to protect themselves and their families during emergencies. This special week is a national effort led by Public Safety Canada, provincial and territorial emergency management organizations, Indigenous organizations, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.

The theme "Plan for every season" underscores the importance of preparing for emergencies that can occur throughout the year, regardless of the weather or environmental conditions. From winter storms and floods to heatwaves and wildfires, each season brings its own set of risks and challenges. By adopting a comprehensive approach to emergency preparedness, Canadians can mitigate the impact of these hazards and enhance their ability to respond effectively in any situation.

By taking a few simple steps, you can become better prepared to face a range of emergencies – anytime, anywhere. It is important to:

  • Know the risks – Although the consequences of disasters can be similar, knowing the risks specific to our community and our region can help you better prepare.
  • Make a plan – It will help you and your family know what to do
  • Get an emergency kit – During an emergency, we will all need some basic supplies. We may need to get by without power or tap water. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in an emergency.
