Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to Fire Prevention
This year’s Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW™) campaign, “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention™,” works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe when cooking.
Below are a few Safety Tip Sheets provided as part of Fire Prevention Week.
Importance of fire prevention
In a fire, mere seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy. Fire safety education isn’t just for school children. Teenagers, adults, and the elderly are also at risk in fires, making it important for every member of the community to take some time every October during Fire Prevention Week to make sure they understand how to stay safe in case of a fire.
Home Escape Plan
This weekend is a great time to practice or make a fire home fire escape plan with your family to ensure if you have a fire emergency within your home you can get out safely. Always plan for 2 ways out.
Testing Smoke and CO (Carbon Monoxide) Alarms
This weekend is also a great chance to ensure you test your installed and working smoke and CO alarms in your house. If they are battery operated and are not a sealed battery alarm unit and it has been a year since you changed the battery, this is a great opportunity to do that part of maintaining the alarm. The alarms also need to be vacuumed as well as I always recommend that they get cleaned on a monthly routine. Also, please remember smoke alarms and CO alarms need to be replaced every 10 years or as instructed by the manufacturer.
